Privacy Policy

Overview

Mutus is a WhatsApp protection app for Android. We are committed to your privacy. This policy explains what data the app accesses, what stays on your device, and what (if anything) reaches our servers.

What Mutus accesses on your device

Mutus uses Android's NotificationListenerService to read WhatsApp notification previews — the same short text snippets visible on your lock screen. This allows Mutus to:

• Detect incoming calls and messages
• Scan message text for scam keywords
• Identify contact names and numbers from notification metadata

Mutus also requests the Contacts permission to classify callers (unknown vs known vs VIP).

What stays on your device

All of the following data is stored locally on your phone and never leaves it:

• Your contact list and VIP list
• Message content and notification text
• Event log (calls blocked, texts screened)
• Response templates and settings
• Weekly activity statistics

What is sent to our servers

Mutus sends only two types of data to our servers, and neither contains personal information:

• Anonymous aggregate analytics: Once per day, the app may report aggregate counts (e.g. "5 calls blocked, 12 texts screened today"). No names, numbers, or message content are included.
• Referral tap codes: When someone installs Mutus by tapping a referral link (e.g. mutus.me/x7k2), the 4-character code is recorded. This code is not linked to any user identity.

Third-party services

Mutus does not use any advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs (Google Analytics, Firebase, etc.), or tracking libraries. Our backend infrastructure runs on Railway.

Data retention

Aggregate analytics data on our servers is retained for up to 12 months. Referral tap records are retained indefinitely for business reporting. Neither contains personal data.

Children's privacy

Mutus is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Your rights

Since we hold no personal data on our servers, there is nothing to request, correct, or delete. You can uninstall Mutus at any time to remove all locally stored data from your device.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be noted in the app update release notes.
